Black Beach Engagement Photos

Lacey and Paul had never been to Black Beach before, and I think the beach decided to show off for them a bit during their black beach engagement photos. The entire stretch of dark sand (taconite tailings from mining) was completely empty as the sun came up pink through the wildfire haze – talk about perfect timing! These two spent their first photo session together running barefoot on the beach, dipping their toes in Lake Superior, and in awe that we have a spot that’s similar to Iceland. What better way to capture your love story than watching a smoky sunrise paint the sky, with one of the post popular Minnesota beaches all to yourselves?!

Are you and your partner considering eloping or maybe having a microwedding? Black Beach is a gorgeous location for eloping, and I highly recommend checking out my guide all about getting married on Black Beach!

WHAT TO WEAR FOR YOUR BLACK BEACH ENGAGEMENT PHOTOS

The most important thing about figuring out what to wear? Wearing an outfit that makes you feel comfortable and confident! You’ll want to pick out clothing that makes you feel like you, so you and your partner can really be yourselves for your engagement session.

Some additional tips:

  • Wear comfortable shoes or no shoes at all! The “sand” here is really just really tiny rocks and will be uncomfortable to walk on when they get in your shoes like flip flops, heels, etc.
  • Wearing heels is going to be a tough challenge, considering the “sand” really does act like sand! It’s unstable and unsteady, so keep this in mind.
  • Don’t wear anything that’s too crazy bright or with lots of patterns! It can take away from the natural surrounding a bit.
  • If you’re unsure about what colors, always go with neutrals!! Beiges, whites, creams, blacks, etc. Also wearing all black can look badass if you’re going for a more moody/edgy vibe!

LEAVE NO TRACE ON BLACK BEACH

When visiting this location, it is important to follow the Leave No Trace principles. This beach has gained LOTS of popularity over the last few years, and if we want to continue to have the privilege of visiting this beach, we need to take care of it!

  • Leave only footprints, and take only photos.
  • Pack out what you bring on the beach! There’s one solo garbage can on the main part of the beach, and that’s it. Make sure you bring all of your garbage + everything else you bring back with you.
  • Have a campfire SAFELY. There’s designated campfire pits, so make sure you use those when there’s no fire ban.
  • Be considerate to others! You’ll be sharing the beach with other visitors.
