Intentional Elopement Details to Add To Your Elopement Day

When couples begin planning an intimate elopement experience with me, they often ask about intentional elopement details and if there’s anything they should add! The truth is, it is rarely about doing more. It is about choosing details that feel deeply personal to you! And trust me, the options of what that could look like are truly limitless.

Some Of My Favorite Elopement Details I’ve Seen as an Elopement Photographer

As an elopement photographer, I’ve witnessed how meaningful touches can transform a quiet ceremony into something really deeply unique. These details are not just pretty additions!! They tell your story and honor your life experiences.

Below are some of my favorite details I have documented over the years, along with ideas to inspire your own day!

Details to Make Your Elopement Even More Special:

One of the most beautiful parts of intimate weddings is the freedom to make the day completely yours. You get to shake off a strict timeline and large guest list. You are re-writing the rules! Couples who are eloping then have the space to infuse personality into every corner.

Want to Get Inspired?

Here are some great ideas for ways to personalize your elopement, straight from days I’ve photographed in the past!

Wedding Rings Handcrafted from Lake Superior Agates

I photographed a dreamy Wisconsin beach elopement last September, and the bride (Sarah), created their wedding rings from Lake Superior agates they had found! I swear, these are the coolest rings I’ve ever seen.

They have a cabin close to Herbster, WI, which is right along Lake Superior. What a special detail to have!

You don’t have to make your own rings, but it would be pretty cool to get wedding rings that hold the same amount of meaning.

A Custom National Park Sign

The custom National Park signs with the couples married last name and date will NEVER get old!! It’s so much fun, and can hold so much meaning if you and your partner love traveling to National Parks.

You can get your own here! This is a specific “We Eloped” sign that’s still in the shape of the National Park sign too.

Personalized Cups With Their Dog’s Face & Date

Gretta and Nate had the cutest idea of ordering these reusable cups with their dog, their last name, and their date etched onto the cups! Absolutely ADORABLE!

This is a beautiful idea if you have pets at home that can’t physically make it to your elopement!

Love letters from the bride imprinted inside the groom’s suit jacket

Isn’t this the most adorable detail ever?!! Paige and Kyle wrote tons of letters to each other throughout their relationship. On the day of, Kyle surprised Paige by showing her that he got so many of those letters printed inside of his suit jacket! Be right back while I find who’s cutting onions in here 🥹

Ideas of What To Print Inside Your Suit Jacket:

  • Photos of your pets

A BWCA Sign Paired with a Custom Cake

This is a photo of my dear friend’s elopement from the Boundary Waters this last summer! I gifted her this amazing BWCA sign because it’s where her and her now husband met and spent so much time together. It seemed like such a perfect gift, and of course – I had to get a photo of it with their custom cake!

You can get your own BWCA sign here!

memorial floating lantern on log showing details to make your elopement even more special

A Memorial Water Lantern in Honor of a Beloved Grandfather

This was a really special way to honor my bride’s beloved grandfather that passed away a few years before her elopement. Cora and her husband used to go to the water lantern festivals in Minneapolis often, so they wanted to recreate some of their lanterns from that time!

Cora decided she wanted to dedicate one to her grandfather, and it was truly so, so special.

NOTE: They did place water lanterns in the water on a lake, BUT they were all tied together with fish string to be Leave No Trace friendly. We retrieved them after taking a couple of photos! If you’re going to do something like this, PLEASE follow LNT. If you don’t retrieve them, they can harm the aquatic life & wildlife and pollute the water.

Hand Embroidered Handkerchiefs Stitched by the Bride

Are you craftsy? Are you artsy?! The options are truly limitless for different ways to include your talent into the details of your elopement day! One option is you can hand embroider some handkerchiefs like Gretta did for their day!

Other Things You Can Embroider For Your Elopement Details:

  • Shoes (if you’re wearing canvas sneakers)
  • Your suit or partner’s suit
  • Veil
  • Napkins
  • Your tie or partner’s tie
  • Vow books

And if you love the idea of adding embroidery to your details but maybe you don’t embroider, check out Etsy!

Handcrafted Vow Books

I love a good pair of handcrafted vow books! Etsy is another place that has SO many options, no matter the vibe you’re going for! You can get hardcover books with embroidery, simple paper vow books, soft cover vow books, etc. These can really elevate your detail and ceremony photos!

My Favorite Vow Books From Etsy:

A Custom Necklace Honoring Their Cats

Okay, I think it comes as no surprise that SO many (and honestly most) of my couples have pets they’re absolutely obsessed with! But often times, their pets can’t be with them physically on their elopement day, so I provide my couples with an entire idea list of ways they can include their pets! Without them physically being there.

So Hali decided to get a custom necklace with the outline of their cats & names to wear during their elopement last fall! Adorable, right?!

You can read my whole guide on how to include pets in your elopement here!

Foraged Florals and Greenery for Elopement Dinner Details

I’m obsessed with this! For Lily & Charlie’s Ely MN Elopement, Charlie’s mom set up their entire elopement dinner table. My favorite detail of the table was the foraged wildflowers and greenery from the yard! It was such a beautiful way to tie in the fact that their elopement day was completely centered around their relationship and nature.

NOTE: If you want to forage for some of your own details for your elopement, just make sure you’re foraging responsibly!

Wine Bottle with a Custom Label of Their Dog

ISN’T THIS JUST ADORABLE?! Chloe and Walker wanted to include their dog, Remi, for their Lake Superior intimate wedding but again, she couldn’t be there physically. They got a wine bottle with a custom label of her, so she could be there with them as they celebrated after their ceremony!

Etsy is going to be the perfect place to get something like this!

Intentional Details Elevate Your Elopement Photos

From a photography perspective, these elements also add texture and storytelling depth to your gallery too. Close up images of rings resting on moss or vow books held between hands become some of the most treasured photographs from the day!

If there’s something you and your partner are wondering how you can tie into your elopement day, looking into a detail to add of that something is the perfect way to do so.

Why Elopement Details Matter More Than You Think!

When you elope, every choice carries weight. Without a large production surrounding you, the small details naturally become more significant.

Intentional details ground you in the moment. They slow you down. They give you something tangible to hold, read, light, or share!

And there are opportunities for connection created through these details! A handwritten letter from a parent. A memorial item honoring someone who cannot be present. A cake shared on a mountaintop after vows. These are the moments that can make an elopement feel rich!

Thoughtful touches also help tell a cohesive story in your final gallery. The textures of wood, water, florals, fabric, and handwritten ink all add layers that reflect your environment and your personality.

Additional Ideas for Intentional Details to Add to Your Elopement

If you are dreaming up your own celebration, here are a few additional ways to incorporate personality into your day:

  • Handmade custom mugs for sunrise coffee after your ceremony
  • “We Eloped” announcement cards
  • Custom wedding illustrations
  • Map of where you’re eloping (National park, State park, etc)
  • Polaroids of you two
  • Love letters to each other
  • Postcards, stickers, patches, mementos
  • Backpack signs for hiking elopements
  • Crystal boutonnieres
  • Framed photos of pets or loved ones
  • Embroidered veil
  • Handwritten letters from family and friends
  • Handfasting cord if having a handfasting ceremony
  • A small cake, cheesecake, or favorite pastries to share
  • Matching socks or socks featuring your pets’ faces

The key is not to include everything. Instead, choose one or two elements that feel like an extension of your relationship, and blend those into your day!

(A great place to order custom details for your big day is Etsy!)

Creating a Day That Feels Like You

The most meaningful small wedding days are not built on whatever is trending online. They are built on intention and meaning. When you focus on details to make your elopement even more special, you are really focusing on how you want your day to feel.

Here are some of the common emotions I see my couples prioritizing for their day:

  • Calm
  • Honest
  • Rooted in nature
  • Playful
  • Sentimental
  • Adventurous

Take a few minutes to think through how you want to feel on your day. The details will become clear. And then they will serve as quiet anchors throughout the day supporting your dream day!

Details Hold Memories and Invite Emotion Into Your Day

If you are planning your own intimate wedding, start by asking what matters most. From there, let your details reflect that answer. In doing so, you will create a celebration that feels beautifully, undeniably yours!!
