On May 10th, 2024, the United States experienced an insanely incredible solar storm that produced the beautiful Northern Lights across many dark skies!! I was fortunate enough to be able to head out to a local public land location and experience the Aurora Borealis for the second time!! The northern lights in Wisconsin was an incredible display last Friday.
I arrived to the local park just before the sun completely set, so I could get my gear all set-up. The sun wasn’t even fully set before the northern lights started showing up! (You need dark skies to experience the Aurora, which made this even more incredible)
Pssst.. want to try to catch the Northern Lights for your elopement day? Let’s start chatting, because I’m a local Minnesota and Wisconsin elopement photographer that’s caught the aurora a couple times now 😉
The best time to see the northern lights in Wisconsin is typically during the winter because of the skies getting darker much quicker, but you can still experience them in all seasons!! The best time is from 10pm to 3am, and you will need cloudless skies!
To see and experience the Northern Lights, you will want to be as far away from any light pollution as possible, and head north from wherever you are. Here’s a dark sky map that’ll help you find a good spot to witness the lights! Ideally, you’ll want to find a spot where there’s blue, as that’s the darkest sky areas! (Remember, trying to hunt for the aurora is all about being patient)
